What is Reiki?

Originally, a Japanese word for "Universal Life Energy" or "Spiritual Energy," In the West, Reiki both as the name of the energy, and system employed for its administration, share the same term. Reiki is a band of energy frequencies, believed to be in the alpha range, that are native to the Earth. It is very likely that Reiki energy also exists throughout the Universe.

Reiki is different from electromagnetic waves. Reiki does not seem to possess a particular polarity. Reiki travels through non-conductive materials, such as rubber, plastic, natural and artificial fiber. Thus, a Reiki practitioner can deliver a Reiki healing session while wearing surgical gloves made of latex or similar material without the slightest difficulty. In our Reiki classes, we ask students, as an experiment, to place their hands on the back of another student's chair. Invariably, within several seconds, the Reiki energy passes from the student's hands through the back of the chair and into the body of the other student.

Reiki energy has the ability to interact with the cells of living organisms, i.e., humans, animals and plants, to help balance and harmonize their functions. Reiki supports the natural healing process in all living organisms, i.e., physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Anytime a Reiki practitioner places his or her hands in contact with living cells, i.e., the cells of his or her own body, another person's, or animal's or plant's, the cells in contact witht he Reiki practitioner's hands recognize that Reiki energy is available, and within several seconds, these cells start drawing the Reiki energy within. With the process of drawing the Reiki energy in, there is a feeling or perception of energy flow. The perception could include a sense of heat, tingling, or pulsation ... the stronger the perception, then the stronger the cells' draw of Reiki energy. The delivery of Reiki requires no conscious effort on the part of the Reiki practitioner. The Reiki practitioner's function is to be a passive channel, thus, allowing the energy to pass through his or her chakras, travel to the palms of the hands and fingertips, and from there, into the cells of the person, animal or palnt receiving the Reiki treatment. In this manner, the Reiki energy is best able to interact with the natural healing ability of the body receiving the session. John Harvey Gray always says, "get out of the way of the energy," " do not try to control it." The practice of Reiki teaches us to be present and caring, yet unconditional and to get our ego out of the way of the Reiki healing session. Reiki teaches us unconditional love.
